Code Enforcement

  • The City's Code of Ordinances states the requirements for hedge heights throughout the City:

    New plantings cannot be installed within the City right-of-way - Code Section 14.1.

    If there is vegetation already in this area, it must conform to the City's regulations.

    Hedges - Non-Waterfront Code Section 42-376  (Also see graphics below)

    1. Maximum of 8 feet
      1. Rear property line
      2. Side yard from rear property line to front setback line
      3. Front side yard to main residential structure
    2. Maximum of 5 feet
      1. Front setback line to front property line
      2. Along front property line
    3. Maximum of 30 inches
      1. Within the sight visibility area closes to the roadway (City right-of-way)

    Hedges - Waterfront Code Section 42-377  (Also see graphics below)

    1. Maximum of 3 feet
      1. Rear 25 foot setback (seawall to rear setback line) - Side yard and along landward side of the seawall from side property lines
    2. Maximum of 8 feet
      1. Side yard from rear setback line to front setback line
      2. Front side yard to main residential structure
    3. Maximum of 5 feet
      1. Front setback line to front property line
      2. Along front property line
    4. Maximum of 30 inches
      1. Within the sight visibility area closes to the roadway (City right-of-way)

    Please be sure to keep all your vegetation cut/trimmed and follow the guidelines for the hedge heights.

    Code Enforcement
  • There are four ways to file a compliant with Code Enforcement:

    • In-Person: The Code Enforcement Staff is in the office Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and are available to take your complaints in person during these times
    • Online
    • Telephone: You can contact the Code Enforcement Office at 954-784-3409
    • U.S. Mail: You can mail your complaints to the Code Enforcement Office at
      2200 NE 38th Street
      Lighthouse Point, FL 33064.

    Effective July 1, 2021, a person designated as a code inspector may not initiate an investigation of a potential violation of a duly enacted code or ordinance by way of an anonymous complaint. A person who reports a potential violation of a code or ordinance must provide his or her name and address to the governing body of the respective board or county commissioners before an investigation occurs. This paragraph does not apply if the person designated as a code inspector has reason to believe that the violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare or imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources.

    Code Enforcement
  • The Code Enforcement Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. There is also an officer available on the weekends from 8 am to 4 pm

    If you have an emergency that cannot wait until normal working hours or if you need to contact the officer on duty during the weekend, you can call the Lighthouse Point Police Department dispatcher at 954-942-8080. They will either contact the Code Enforcement Officer, if on duty, or dispatch a Police Officer to investigate your complaint.

  • You can always visit the Code Enforcement Office during regular business hours to view the City’s code book. The City’s Code of Ordinances is also available online. At this screen you will be able to search or view the entire Code of Ordinances.
